Also known as the Cuello de Luna (the Moon’s Neck), it’s the highest active volcano in the world with 5897 meters above sea level, located less than 2 hours south from the city of Quito. The Cotopaxi National Park offers us unique landscapes which are typical of the Andes, surrounded by more imposing volcanoes such as Rumiñahui, Pasochoa and Sincholagua. The park allows us to walk along its lakes of volcanic origin, which lead us to the José Rivas refuge at 4860 meters above sea level.

The lake was formed after a collapse suffered due to an eruption 800 years ago, and it is also considered the last resting place of Atahualpa. The lagoon gets its emerald turquoise colored water from the concentrations of minerals. It is considered one of the fifteen most beautiful lagoons in the world according to Twistedsifter. The area is known for its community-based tourism.
